Synopsis
After the events of Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, makes a play to seize the reins of Gotham’s criminal underworld. Except for the bat signal in the last frame of the season finale, we never got our Robert Pattinson cameo in The Penguin. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of the Penguin to smoke tobacco in Batman (2022), but failed.

For his own series, however, the character is depicted as an occasional tobacco user, with a preference for cigars.. An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo.

The first episode is a direct sequel to Matt Reeves' Batman and I imagine those who haven’t seen the last one will be a little lost. But I watched Batman a while back, and this show did an admirable job of quickly introducing me to where the movie left off without getting bogged down in a didactic summary. It also recreates the film’s aesthetic and dark tone well, although the show has many more moments of sly levity than the film.
But so far it’s off to a great start
As in Batman, Colin Farrell does an excellent job portraying the Penguin as a stereotypical mobster " ;street person:" rough, foul, lively and prone to violence; but also understanding, cunning and able to read people. The character may have absolutely nothing to do with the comic book version, but he is interesting in his own right. I have my doubts about the show the Penguin gives as a teenage sidekick; and I don’t know if the Penguins’ machinations will be enough to sustain a full season.
